The Fall of Mariupol
Given the hideous brutality of the Russian assault on the steel works in this martyred Ukraine city, the end seems near. The world sits back and watches.
No Dunkirk evacuation of defenders by small boats defying Nazi airpower.
We have relinquished the Black Sea to the Commies. (Putin still is a Commie thug and runs the Kremlin like his old bosses did when he was KGB. So Commies it is.)
No Berlin Airlift appears on the horizon for Ukraine now Russia is blowing up the tracks used to funnel supplies to the nation.
Took ’em a while. Probably from their self-imposed hypnotic belief they’d win quickly so why destroy infrastructure? But Western armaments are in the field now, brought in by rail, and Western leaders have taken a train to Kiev for photo ops with Zelinsky. Thumbing their nose at the Russian bear.
Now the rails are under attack.
If the Russians cut off the supply of weapons successfully, the sheer weight of their bloated and incompetent military stands a better chance of — eventually — treating all Ukraine like Mariupol. But we can’t have Allied air power flying stuff in. The Soviet Union blinked when the Berlin Airlift broke their attempt to blockade West Berlin. Which survived until the Evil Empire imploded and the infamous Wall came down.
But this time NATO flinches from contesting the airspace over the invaded country. Evidently afraid Putin won’t blink as his predecessors did. We might have to shoot down Russian planes! Oh the horror.
Putin is like one of those unkillable zombies from Hollywood horror flicks, lurching abroad to spread death and horror, just when you thought the Evil Empire dead for good and all. Friday the Thirteenth Moscow-style.
Guess we’re down to “remember Azovstal.” Like “remember the Alamo.”
We could have done better.
